The Future of Football in Peru Is at Risk Due to Protests

After a two-week suspension as a result of the civil unrest, which is said to have resulted in the deaths of over fifty people, Peru’s top division resumes play this weekend behind closed doors. After President Dina Boluarte’s predecessor Pedro Castillo was ousted, there has been a flurry of political demonstrations across the country calling for her resignation and calling for new elections.

The nation has experienced the most severe political violence in more than two decades with the clashes between protesters and police. The start of domestic top-flight football was postponed in the middle of January “to prevent and avoid risks that affect the safety and physical integrity of people.” The league will now begin on matchday three, “which will be played without spectators on the recommendation of the authorities,” as the first two rounds have been postponed.               RUSSIAN NOC WANTS AGREEMENTS WITH PERU, OTHERS AFRET MEETING

The Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) is seeking to secure cooperative agreements with South Africa, Mali and Peru following meetings on the sidelines of the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) General Assembly here. ROC President Stanislav Pozdnyakov has claimed that his organisation is “preparing to sign memorandums of cooperation” with the Sport African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC), the National Olympic and Sports Committee of Mali (CNOSM) and the Peruvian Olympic Committee (POC).

PERU NATIONAL TEAM NEWS: RAÚL RUIDIAZ CALLED BACK TO THE PERU TEAM

Raúl Ruidíaz is apparently in line to be called up by Peru for a pair of upcoming international friendlies. If he were to play, it would mark his first appearance for the national team in more than a year. He last made an appearance during World Cup qualifying and hasn’t started for them since Nov. 13, 2020. Peru’s quest to qualify for the 2022 World Cup recently fell short, as they lost to Australia in a playoff. That led to a managerial change with Juan Reynoso taking over for longtime manager Ricardo Gareca in August.

While that offers a bit of an opening for Ruidíaz to get back into the national team, it comes at a somewhat inconvenient time as the next major tournament Peru plays in won’t be until the 2024 Copa America. If Ruidíaz were to remain with Peru for both of their upcoming games — Sept. 24 and 27 — he would miss the Sounders’ must-win game against FC Cincinnati on Sept. 27. The Sounders will potentially also be missing Alex Roldan (El Salvador), Jordan Morris (United States), Xavier Arreaga (Ecuador), Nouhou (Cameroon) and Cristian Roldan (injury).           TENORIO: ORLANDO CITY SET TO ACQUIRE PERUVIAN STAR WILDER CARTAGENA

Per reporting from The Athletic’s Paul Tenorio, Orlando City is acquiring Peruvian international midfielder Wilder Cartagena from Ittihad Kalba in the United Arab Emirates. Cartagena, 27, is an experienced defensive midfielder in the prime of his career. Before his stint in the Middle East, he played for Peruvian giants Alianza Lima as well as stints in Argentina and Mexico. He played a rotational role for Peru in an unsuccessful campaign for a second-straight World Cup appearance.

The midfielder will likely fill a TAM roster spot for Orlando City after the recent departures of Sebas Mendez and Sebastian van der Water, a pair of expensive players. Cartagena will likely fill Mendez’s role on the field as well serving as the primary backup to Cesar Araujo, or potentially alongside him (or Araujo’s successor should he be sold on soon). To this effect, Australia will need to overcome the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Peru to get to the World Cup in Qatar later this year.
